Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, often known as AOC, was born on October 13, 1989, and raised in the Bronx by working-class parents. Her father was a small business owner and architect from the South Bronx, while her mother moved to New York from Arecibo, Puerto Rico. Growing up between The Bronx and Yorktown Heights, AOC saw how where a family lived could affect their opportunities. She later attended Boston University, studying economics, and her family faced significant medical debt, an experience that influenced her view on healthcare and economic inequality. After college, AOC returned to
The Bronx and worked in education and community organizing. In 2018, she ran for Congress and defeated a longtime incumbent in the Democratic primary before winning the general election. She became the youngest woman elected to Congress and represents New York’s 14th Congressional District.
As a member of Congress, AOC advocated for policies focused on working families, affordable healthcare, housing, climate action, and economic opportunity. She has supported the Green New Deal, which focuses on transitioning to renewable energy while creating jobs, and she continues to advocate for investments in public housing and affordable housing. In 2026, she reintroduced the Green New Deal for Public Housing Act, which would fund repairs and improvements to public housing while creating union jobs.
AOC also emphasizes making healthcare more affordable and accessible. She has supported lowering prescription drug costs, expanding healthcare coverage, and protecting programs such as
Medicaid. Her economic policies focus on workers earning fair wages, limiting corporate price increases, and ensuring that corporations contribute more to the economy.
Another major part of her platform is climate and environmental protection. Along with climate legislation, she has advocated for clean energy, green jobs, and environmental protections in communities.
Her recent work has also addressed the environmental and economic effects of artificial intelligence and data centers.
AOC also advocated for immigration reform, gun-safety legislation, criminal justice reform, and policies centered on human rights. Her work continues to focus on expanding access to housing, healthcare, education, and economic opportunities for working-class communities.
