Mark Levine, who was born in Chicago, Illinois, and he’s running to be your next Democratic NYC Comptroller. Currently serving as the 28th borough president of Manhattan he has led the fight to end the affordability crisis in NYC. He has identified opportunities for new housing units, fought to protect tenants, and advocated for policies to create affordable housing. He has also launched campaigns to plant a million more trees and deliver millions of dollars of low-interest loans to small businesses, and has pushed the city to improve its mental health system.
In 1994, he founded the Neighborhood Trust Federal Credit Union, which today has provided over $100 million in loans to local families and businesses in Northern Manhattan and the South Bronx. Levine first took office in 2014 and served on the New York City Council for 8 years, acting as Chair of the Committee on Parks, Chair of the Jewish Caucus, and Chair of the Committee on Health, where he brought his science-based and data driven approach to lead the city out of the Covid-19 pandemic, one of its worst public health crises. In city council, he introduced and passed transformative tenants rights protections, including the first-in-the-nation “Right to Counsel” law.
Levine earned a B.A. in physics from Haverford College in Pennsylvania and earned a master’s degree in Public Policy from Harvard University. Levine previously served as a bilingual math and science teacher at Junior High School 149 in the South Bronx. Having taught in the South Bronx, he understands the struggles of surviving in a community where many people experience poverty and unstable housing. Since his time on the city council, he has made it a top priority to improve the lives of New Yorkers. Levine’s goal is to promote affordable, equitable, and healthy communities as the Comptroller of New York City.
